Day 3: Budapest (B)
Budapest is a city rich in historical treasures from medieval ruins to late 19th and early 20th century Secessionist buildings. It was actually created after the unification of three separate towns, Buda and Obuda on the west bank of the Danube and Pest on the east bank. This morning you will board your coach for a half day tour to visit Szentendre and Visegrad. Szentendre is a pretty little town 19 km North of Budapest. It boasts Serbian Orthodox churches, a charming old town center and art and craft centers. Visegard is home to a 13th century mighty Visegrad Citadel on the hilltop as well as a royal palace. This afternoon return to Budapest and spend the afternoon on your own. Architecturally, Budapest is a gem. Magnificent buildings adorn both sides of the Danube and you will have no end of sites to visit this afternoon.
Day 4: Budapest - Prague (B, D)
This morning after an early start and early breakfast, board your coach for your transfer to Bratislava via Estergorm. Cross into Slovakia at Bratislava and then finally to Prague. The beauty of this city has been praised by poets, writers, and composers since the 12th century. Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its romantic cobbled streets and elegant bridges in “Old Town”. The remainder of the day is free for you to acquaint yourself to this jewel of Europe.
Day 5: Prague (B)
Meet your guide today for your full day sightseeing tour. See the Old Town Square which is home to some of the prettiest buildings in the city, Prague Castle which was founded by Prince Borivoj in the 9th century and has managed to retain churches, halls, and towers from every period in history. The castle became the seat of the Czechoslovak president in 1918 and the current president has an office there. Other sites include The Jewish quarter and the 14th century Charles Bridge which is a lovely span full of musicians, street performers, craft peddlers and artists. The tour will also include King Wenceslas Statue, the incredible Astronomical Clock and more. This evening you will see the Black Light Theatre with your provided ticket.
Day 6: Prague (B)
Today is an excursion day to the castles in the Bohemia’s picturesque towns and the Bohemian Spa resorts. The castle at Karlstein stands in isolation above wooded valleys and has changed little since Charles IV hunted here in the 14th century. Further south is the historic medieval town of Cesky Krumlov. Popular as a therapeutic retreat, the spa town of Karlsbad is a popular spot for both tourists and locals. Return to Prague at dinner time.
Day 7: Prague - Berlin (B, D)
The motorcoach will take you today to Berlin. Berlin was almost bombed into rubble during WWII but has reawakened into a dynamic bustling city. Upon arrival you will be dropped at your hotel for check in and dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 8: Berlin (B, D)
Breakfast begins your day after which you will enjoy a full day of sightseeing highlighting all the major sights including the imposing Brandenburg Gate, a magnificent Neo classical structure modeled on the Propylaia of the Acropolis in Athens erected between 1778 and 1791. Built between 1884 and 1894 in the Italian High Renaissance style, the Reichstag was originally intended as the official seat of German Parliament and is the site where on October 2, 1990 Germany was reunified. The ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche is a world famous symbolic landmark with only its broken west tower still standing after the British bombed it in 1943. The historic heart of the city is located around the wide and fashionable avenue of aristocratic old Berlin and its continuation, Karl Liebknecht Strasse, which extends east of Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz once the heart of socialist Germany. South of Unter den Linden is the infamous Checkpoint Charlie; a legacy of Berlins divided city days. The dreaded Wall used to wind a path nearly 100 miles around greater Berlin, but now only a few traces remain of this symbol of the Cold War.
Day 9: Berlin (B)
Today is free to do as you wish. You may wish to continue on your own to see the sights that Berlin has to offer. Tiergarten is one of the cities most beautiful and extensive public parks and might be a pleasant spot to enjoy a picnic lunch. This afternoon you might include in your explorations the Altes Museum, one of the worlds most beautiful Neo Classical structures, the Pergamonmuseum one of Berlins major attractions, Schloss Charlottenburg, the palace intended as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte erected between 1701 and 1713 and Berliner Dom, a Protestant Cathedral built between 1747 and 1750 as a church and mausoleum for the Hohenzollen family. Make sure you find some time during your busy day to stroll around Nikolaiviertel, a region that was once home to some of Berlin’s oldest homes until they were destroyed in WWII. A redevelopment of the area between 1979 and 1987 has resulted in an attempt to recreate a medieval village of narrow streets filled with small shops, cafes and restaurants.
